Artisan’s Yard

Artisan’s Yard

This project aimed to revive the significance of the Artisan’s Yard and celebrate its history as a Solitary Cell Block.

The intention is to prepare the yard and its surroundings which will be used by the public for future purposes that stretch beyond the current project. Enhancing visitor safety and accessibility has been achieved by improving public connections and pathways. The aim is to create a space that is respectful of the Precinct’s rich history.

Significant works were completed on The Dead House including drainage, structural roof repairs, new slate roof and sandstone stairs. The adjacent sandstone wall C115a was completely demolished and rebuilt. This included labelling each stone prior to demolition, installing piers and footings to support the wall and place each stone in its former position.

All walls inside the Artisan’s Yard had some level of rectification, the majority being to re-point the walls. Landscaping and concrete slab removal was also undertaken within the Yard. Two openings were also created within the walls of the Yard and new metal gates (reflecting the original gates) were installed creating a link between areas of the precinct.
